Civil marriage in Iran does not have legal standing under the nation’s Islamic laws, forcing couples to opt for Sharia marriage for legal validation.

This situation has prompted numerous Iranians to pursue civil marriage solutions abroad that meet their personal or religious needs without compromising their legal standing both locally and internationally.

This article examines the statistics, options, and legal consequences of civil marriage in Iran and the practice of Sharia marriage.

Statistics on Iranian Marriage Requests in the UAE

From October 2023 to October 2024, there was a remarkable 50% growth in marriage requests from Iranians at Easy Wedding, signalling an increased interest in marrying outside Iran. This trend is mainly due to the demand for marriages between the UAE and Georgia, where 82% involve an Iranian and a non-Iranian partner. In comparison, 18% are couples from Iran.

Top Wedding Locations

The UAE is favoured by 46% of these couples, Georgia by 24%, and 23% opt for virtual weddings, showcasing a trend towards online ceremonies. The remaining 7% prefer a mix of other locations.

Wedding Preferences

75% of these couples choose civil marriages conducted in Georgia or via Abu Dhabi’s legal system. Only 5% choose traditional weddings, and 4% go for religious ceremonies like the Sharia (Nikah), indicating limited but steady interest in religious weddings.

Couples’ Religious Backgrounds

The data reveal that 12% of weddings are between Muslim brides and Christian grooms, with 32% of couples being both Muslim, indicating a strong preference for same-faith unions. 7% of Muslim brides choose partners from different religions, while merely 4% of non-Muslim couples choose the UAE for their civil marriage in Iran.

Permits for Interfaith Marriages

Interestingly, 16% of men are applying for permission to marry non-Muslim women, showcasing an increased openness towards interfaith unions. This trend reflects changing attitudes towards civil marriage in Iran, especially among those seeking legal recognition abroad.

International Marriage Options for Iranians

Iranians looking to bypass traditional marriage structures have two main routes. The first is through a civil marriage in Abu Dhabi- simple, globally recognised, and free from religious ties—requiring minimal paperwork. While civil marriage in Iran isn’t recognised, the alternative is a Shariah marriage within Iran, performed according to religious customs. For those aiming for a civil marriage in Iran but abroad, Georgia is highly regarded. Its ease of process and lack of residency requirements make it ideal. Georgia and the UAE appeal to those seeking beautiful venues and professional wedding services that are popular for destination weddings.

Marriage Legalisation in Iran

Marriage in Iran is legally bound to Shariah practices. Those who pursue a civil marriage in Iran face the challenge that their marriage is not recognised legally, which can lead to serious consequences like adultery accusations. Therefore, anyone planning a civil marriage in Iran must also engage in a Shariah marriage ceremony to meet the country’s legal marriage requirements.

Marriage Legalisation in the US

The US has no marriage type restrictions and honours civil marriage in Iran, where Shariah marriages are legally established. Couples looking to relocate and marry can leverage their status for US residency and sponsorship applications.

Conversion if One of the Partners is Non-Muslim

The rules for marrying in Iran with a non-Muslim partner are precise. A non-Muslim groom needs to convert to Islam to marry a Muslim bride. A bride of an Abrahamic faith marrying a Muslim groom isn’t required to convert. This contrasts with the rules for civil marriage in Iran, which, when conducted abroad, do not necessitate conversion, thus simplifying civil marriage in Iran procedures.

Sharia Marriage Requirements

  • Muslims can apply for marriage at the Sharia Court.
  • Requires two Muslim witnesses to be present.
  • All participants should bring their passports and copies.
  • Be prepared for the marriage to potentially happen immediately.
