Syrian Marriage Rules 2024: Act Now for a Smooth Wedding!

|

What if your marriage was declared legally void simply because of your partner’s religion?

Syrian marriage rules are strictly religious, prohibiting civil marriages and restricting interfaith unions, especially for Muslim women.

In this blog, we will explore the strict religious guidelines governing marriage in Syria, the legal challenges for interfaith unions, and the necessary steps for legal recognition.

Brief Overview of Syrian Marriage Rules

Syrian marriages are not complete without religious rituals, and are not legally acceptable. Despite having 60-65% Arabic speaking Sunni Muslim population and 12% Christian population, the Syrian marriage rules are kept strict, especially in case of interfaith marriages.

According to the Article 48 (2) of Personal Status Law, a marriage between Muslim woman and a non-Muslim man makes the marriage null and legally void, which highlights the legal intricacies of Syrian marriage rules.

Moreover, the Syrian marriage rules are primarily based on religious grounds. Article 305 of Syrian marriage rules, based on the Hanafi school of Islamic law, allows the marriage between a Muslim man and a Non-Muslim woman under one condition: the woman must belong to one of the Abrahamic religions.
